How to enter

• Participants must reside on Maui (individual entries only).
• You may enter up to five (5) lei per category.
• One entry form per lei is required.
• All lei must be the original, newly created work of the contestant

Drop‑off

ʻOhana Room, Lei Receiving Table
8:00–10:00 a.m. • Friday, May 1, 2026
(No late entries can be accepted.)

Pick‑up (Same Day)

Between 2:00- 4:00 p.m. • Same day
Lei not picked up will become the property of OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort.

You may enter one or both:

Fresh Floral Lei

• Must be made from natural plant materials (flowers, leaves, stems, fruits, seeds).
• No artificial materials, dye, wire, or tape.
• Permitted bindings: string, yarn, ribbon, dental floss.
• Endangered plants are prohibited.

Recycled / Non‑Floral Lei

• Must be made from recycled or repurposed materials.
• Must not contain hazardous or offensive materials.

 

Lei Requirements (Both Categories)

• Length: 24 inches.
• Measurement does not include the tying length (loop or tail).
• Must be wearable and untied.
• Must use Hawaiian lei-making methods.

Required Hawaiian Methods

Use one or a combination of the following six traditional Hawaiian lei‑making methods:

• Haku: Braiding flowers, leaves, and/or fruit into a three-strand plait using fern, tī leaf, hau fiber, etc.
• Hili: Braiding or weaving a single plant material.
• Humupapa: Sewing plant materials to a foundation such as dried banana fiber, lauhala, or tī leaf.
• Kui: Piercing plant materials are pierced and stringing them through the center or side.
• Kīpuʻu: Tying leaf stems together into a knot to form a chain (no cordage or needle).
• Wili: Wrapping plant materials onto a backing (tī leaf, lauhala, dried banana fiber, etc.) using fiber, thread, or cordage.

Judging Criteria (1–10 Scale)

Each lei is scored in four areas:

1. Maiau – Technique & Execution
2. Нетʻonoʻo Hana – Creativity & Originality
3. Haku – Use of Materials & Composition
4. Kela – Complexity & Excellence

Highest total score = category placement.
Top score across all entries = Best in Show.

Awarding of Prizes

• All judging decisions are final.
• Contestants do not need to be present to win.
• Physical awards may be picked up on May 1, 2026, between 2:00–4:00 p.m. (valid ID required).
• Monetary awards will be mailed after June 20, 2026.

Public Lei Display

All lei will be on public display on May 1, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the ʻOhana Room, OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort.
